Chef Lillian Luk provided diners with a masterclass in sensational Shanghainese cooking on Sunday 25th February, joining Chef Atul Kochhar in the Kanishka kitchen for a highly anticipated instalment of our Sunday Supper Club series

Offering a perfect way to celebrate the Lunar New Year, Lillian Luk’s bespoke four-course menu showcased a spectacular selection of lesser-known Shanghainese delicacies alongside favourites from her renowned Shanghai Supper Club. Each dish was flawlessly executed with a tasteful Indo-Chinese twist, seamlessly complementing Kanishka’s authentic Pan-Indian heritage

The evening began with an exquisite selection of Shanghainese cold starters, featuring Kaofu (wheat gluten) with dried mushrooms and peanuts, alongside traditional drunken chicken. Savoury Shanghai snacks, such as crispy spring rolls and steamed glutinous rice shao mai, paved the way for an extraordinary main course of Dong Po-style braised pork belly and slow-cooked pork knuckles. To conclude the feast, guests savoured a choice of two vibrant desserts: a delicate seaweed-dusted rice cake or fermented rice wine lees served with glutinous rice balls.

Lillian is the founder of the Shanghai Supper Club, an acclaimed pop-up dining experience and occasional takeaway service based in Marylebone. The primary focus of her supper club is to share and promote the authentic, lesser-known culinary traditions of Shanghai, her vibrant home city.

Her distinctive culinary style serves as an ode to her grandmother’s comforting home cooking, beautifully interwoven with the ubiquitous street food snacks of Shanghai. Lillian has been featured in the National Geographic documentary Gok’s Chinese Takeaway, Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, and various other prominent food and art projects. Most recently, she competed in a major television cooking series broadcast on Amazon Prime UK in early 2024.
