Kanishka by Atul Kochhar, the acclaimed pan-Indian restaurant in Mayfair, is delighted to announce that Executive Chef Ashok Kumar was selected to compete on BBC’s Great British Menu 2024, as part of the London and Southeast England region.
Presented by Andi Oliver, and airing on BBC Two and iPlayer at 8pm on Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th February, this years competition theme is celebrating the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, with a banquet hosted by the British Ambassador in France and Team GB to wish the British athlete’s good luck in Paris.
Regular judges include Michelin-starred, previous two-time banquet winner, Tom Kerridge, restaurateur Nisha Katona and comedian and food podcast broadcaster, Ed Gamble.

Executive Chef Ashok Kumar
Chef Ashok Kumar has worked in the kitchens of a number of prestigious restaurants. After receiving a diploma in hotel management from the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management, Kumar went on to work as commis chef at Taj Hotel and Palaces, the Hilton and Crowne Plaza. He then joined Atul Kochhar’s Indian Essence as Jr. Sous Chef, working his way up to Executive Chef. Kumar has also held the position of both Sous Chef and Head Chef at Michelin-starred Benares in Mayfair and beat strong competition to make it to the final of the National Chef of the Year 2022 competition. Kumar also won the Lumina Challenge 2023.
In his Executive Chef role at Kanishka, Kumar plays a vital role in curating all menus and producing the outstanding contemporary pan-Indian food the restaurant has become so well renowned for, upholding and surpassing the restaurant’s reputation, and continuously striving to anticipate, meet and exceed great expectations.
